The Annual Wellness Visit: A New Medicare Preventive Service
Elizabeth Rash PhD ARNP FNP-C
There is a lot of controversy about the new health care reform act. However, the Affordable Care Act of 2010 provides Medicare beneficiaries with many free preventive care services including the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV).
The AWV is intended to promote health, identify personal disease risks and recommend preventive care services such as screening tests and immunizations. The AWV is provided free to Medicare beneficiaries. It is a yearly service and there are no deductibles or co-pays.
Here’s what you can expect with your AWV at CFP Physicians Group.
Once you schedule an appointment for your AWV, you will be mailed a packet of forms to complete and bring with you to your visit. Your appointment will take about 20 minutes. At your visit, you will be assessed for hearing loss, fall and safety risks, and memory and depression problems. Your personal and family health history, nutrition, and current medications will be reviewed. Medication risks and potential side effects will be highlighted. Based on this review and your assessments, recommendations for preventive care will be discussed with you. You can decide if and when you might wish to follow these recommendations or discuss them further with your primary care provider. Based on those decisions, you will be scheduled for preventive care services and referred to appropriate specialists or for needed testing.
Additionally, you will receive personalized patient education guidance materials. Information from your AWV will be shared with your primary care provider and you will receive a copy of your preventive care recommendations.
Please contact us at CFP Physicians Group if you have questions about the AWV or other new free Medicare preventive services.
